My fitness pal

I know all the reasons not to have a bathroom scale, not to weigh yourself, not to obsess about looks the way our culture tells us to. But darn, my spare tire(s) are getting me down and I am uncomfortable, physically and mentally, with my extra pounds.

Last night, I went out after dinner feeling bloated and, hell, I’ll just say it, FAT!

This morning, I ate a banana, took myself out for a long walk around the neighbourhood for 50 minutes, then mowed my lawn for an hour and a half, and signed up once again for My Fitness Pal. I downloaded this free app a while ago but quickly got fed up with the hassle of counting calories.

I used a new user name so I could start afresh and during the setup phase was asked to enter my weight. At first I thought I would skip it, but no, I need a goal for crying out loud. So I did it, and it was a shock, and that is going to motivate me. My goal is to lose 20 pounds at a rate of 2 pounds a week, and My Fitness Pal tells me to keep my intake to 1200 calories a day. I can do that. I’ll keep it simple this time, no eating complicated meals with lots of ingredients.

I have committed to three “workouts” a week for 30 minutes – that’s easy to achieve as my walks are usually longer than that and I shall aim to walk every day. Thanks to today’s mowing and walking, I have already burned about 800 calories and consumed only about 250 so I’m ahead of the game.

I just did a quick calculation and ten weeks takes me to the middle of August. That’s not long to stick to the plan. Twenty pounds, ten weeks – fingers crossed 🙂
