Wonderful weekend

Standard

What a relaxing weekend it’s been! I’ve been enjoying some sunning on the deck each day, just as the sun comes around about 9am, so it’s not too strong and burning.

Today we went downtown for a tea and a walk, and rather than go for the city park walk in full sun we opted for a leafy lane instead. Still close to the lake, but lots of mature trees.

After lunch, I retreated to the sewing room because I needed a sunhat. I know I made one for myself ages ago. I even found evidence of it on the blog. But can I find it? Nope! I could have done with it today too.

So I found some fun frog and dragonfly fabrics in the stash and made this. The pattern is from Sweet Red Poppy. I don’t find it fun to make, and won’t be making more for kicks!

After some chili and rice, I picked up the sweater and added a few more rounds.

The whole time I’ve been knitting this, I’ve been trying to come up with a fun way to incorporate the berry and mustard contrast colours. I think with this version, I’ll do the kangaroo pocket on the front in the berry, and add some stripes in both colours…somehow. I want to start adding the new colours in soon, because the solid green is getting kind of boring!

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sporto This is the link to the Ravelry pattern page. My first sweater using this pattern came out so well I wanted to do it again. My gauge is different with this yarn, however, so I’ve tweaked the numbers somewhat. And I didn’t add the pocket last time.

Hopefully by my next post I’ll have made a decision on exactly how I’m going to use the contrast colours.

The makeaholic makes again

Did you see my new byline? I’d be interested to know how many people actually view my blog on a desktop computer and see the pretty WordPress template I use.

I edited the “Just me, waffling on…etc” to “The adventures of a makeaholic”! Credit should go to my boss for the term.

So, what have I got for you this weekend? I’ll try to keep the chat to a minimum.

Legwarmers knitted with Cygnet Chunky and Knit Picks Brava worsted. Same yarn and colours as the batwing sweater. Finished ages ago, forgot to post about them.

Second bucket hat. Sweet Red Poppy, free pattern. Made it smaller, fits perfectly, matches my bag.

Oral hygiene kit. Two layers of cotton, bonded back to back with Heat ‘n Bond. Clear vinyl pockets for all my teeth-cleaning needs. Perfect!

Tiny teapot with removable lid from the book 100 Micro Crochet Motifs by Steffi Glaves. I made it in medium weight yarn just for fun and it finished at 2″ tall. Designer’s was made in sewing thread and was probably a quarter of the size!

And finally, a wallhanging made from a quilt panel. I backed it with batting and cotton, added ladybugs to tie the layers together, hung some small dollar store tools from the bottom with buttons and jute (I bought the tools last year for my gnomes) and added a Garden sign and birdhouse that I found at the dollar store today.

I paid for the fabrics, but I’ll put it on display at work for a while then bring it home to hang it here. It will complement the strawberry summer display I have going on at the front of the store.

If you read my last post, the bag tutorial, you’ll know about the bag FO, so no need to post another photo of that.

Plans in the works: crocheted strawberries, superduper new masks especially for air travel next month, and possibly more bags. And travel plans always go hand-in-hand with crochet/knitting plans because one just cannot waste all that waiting and sitting time doing nothing with one’s hands, right?!

Sewing day!

Sewing day!

I blitzed the house yesterday, went out and got my tire fixed (it had a screw stuck in it), watered my plants and basically got myself all caught up so that today I could just sew.

After a bit of yoga and sunbathing, I retreated to the sewing room. I had a list of potential projects to work on and what I ended up doing was…

PJs for #2 son
3 receiving blankets
Adult bucket hat

All of these fabrics were in my stash. The plaid was a little short so I had to be creative and put my pattern piece opposite ways and refold the fabric carefully (did you notice the pattern runs the “wrong” way on one leg!?). The paper pattern is one I created from an old pair of PJs ages ago.

The paisley flannelette was one I bought years ago just because I liked it. And now I have a friend who’s going to be a grandfather soon.

And the bucket hat is made from quilt cottons and a little interfacing. The pattern is from Sweet Red Poppy and it’s a free download. My printer produced it a bit bigger than it was supposed to – I made the adult hat, forgetting that fact, and it’s big on me. Still, this was the ‘test run’ from which I learned that, yes, I still dislike sewing circles and cylinders together. There were a few frustrating moments with this hat, such as the time that my spool AND bobbin ran out at the same time and it was the perfect shade of pink and I didn’t have any more.

I added a couple of eyelets at the back to cinch it in with a short piece of ribbon.

Another small and quick make from earlier this week is this seahorse set. These are beads I gave myself in my Advent collection last December.

And while the tire folks were fixing my tire yesterday I used the time to walk to Michaels and have a slow browse around. I found these neons which reminded me that I still want to make a sweater with a pop of neon (ideally I wanted pink and green, but these’ll do).

These babies were only $2.99 each as all yarn was 25% off.

So now it’s almost bedtime and I am working the next four days so you can see why I wanted to pack a lot of crafting time in today!
